Deah Lieurance, PhD

Assistant Professor on Invasive Species Biology and Management

Department of Ecosystem Science and Management

Penn State University

I am an Assistant Professor of Invasive Species Biology and Management at Penn State University. I have over 12 years of experience working on invasive species prevention and risk assessment. I led the first horizon scan using a structured framework in the United States for potential invaders for Florida, and am currently leading scans for the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and a national scan for plants in trade, as well as a project to rank secondary spread pathways as a part of the National Early Detection and Rapid Response Framework. My dissertation research addressed many aspects of mechanisms contributing to the success of non-native Lonicera species, and included plant-herbivore interactions, chemical ecology, enemy release, tolerance and resistance to herbivory. I also have experience in the areas of ecosystem ecology, plant allometry, ecophysiology, and the testing and development of biocontrols for prominent invasive plant species in Florida. My previous position kept me behind a desk and I am eager to get back out in the field.

I am a lover of animals-have a Frenchie rescue named Vileaux and she has a Boston Terrier brother named Voodoo. I live in State College with my author partner and I am enjoying seasons again after moving to PA in 2023. My hobbies include restoring mid century modern furniture and obsessing over women's soccer.
